What Do You Do If Your Glass Needs Restoration?

Are you sick of cleaning your glass, only to still see water spots, stains and etching? This is a common ailment on glass surfaces, especially if it exposed to the outdoors or the shower. So what can you do if your glass is stained?

Firstly, what causes glass stains? When glass is exposed to water, the water contains minerals such as calcium and magnesium, and often has contaminants which come in contact with the glass. When the water evaporates or is otherwise removed from the glass, mineral deposits and traces of the contaminants remain. Over time, these build up and the minerals can etch the glass, leaving permanent stains. This is particularly a problem for shower glass.

How do you get rid of them?

In order to get rid of them, various methods can be used depending on how an thorough the stains are. Sometimes, if the stains are light, it is possible to get rid of them with a solution or wipe on product such as vinegar or even toothpaste. This is something you can try yourself to see if you can restore the glass. Popular products to use include:

  • Vinegar and water 50-50 mix

  • Lemon or orange essential oil

  • Toothpaste

  • Baking soda and vinegar mix

If this doesn’t work, it will need a more thorough treatment to get rid of the stains. An abrasive will need to be used to ‘cut’ the glass, taking the deposits and stains with it. This is usually needed if the glass has been exposed for a long time without a proper clean/stain removal.
